Set within the lush volcanic landscape of São Miguel, AZO House is a manifesto of material dialogue. The architecture explores both tension and harmony between raw exposed concrete, the heritage of local basalt, and the welcoming warmth of timber. This material triad defines the identity of the home, anchoring it to the island’s geology while imparting a timeless contemporary quality.

Large glass openings serve as the key element in dissolving boundaries. By opening up the interior spaces, the house invites the landscape inside, integrating the dense greenery and mountain mist into daily life. Outside, the infinity pool acts as a reflecting sheet of water that extends the architectural edge, projecting it toward the surrounding mountains in a tactile and visual connection.

The result is a contemporary dwelling entirely shaped by the scale and force of its setting. The volcanic materiality, the nuances of the insular climate, and the wild nature of the Azores cease to be a mere backdrop, becoming the very elements that shape the living experience and soul of the project.
