Our aim was to design a boutique hotel in a rural area with 37 accommodation units that blend naturally into the terrain. With a prime location overlooking the sea, the main building that houses the studio accommodation units rests on a large flat plot, while the one-bedroom apartment accommodation units rest on the slope of the land, with wide panoramic views of the northern slope.
In our view, the hotel is perfect for leisure tourism, as it incorporates specific areas for this purpose. The development is located in an attractive landscape: the site enjoys unobstructed panoramic views over the sea and the northern slope of the island of São Miguel and has green spaces for common use covering more than 50 m2 per one-bedroom accommodation unit. The accommodation units (studios located in the main building) all have balconies with an area greater than 4 m2. An outdoor swimming pool was designed with dimensions suitable for the development, with an area for adults and another for children, including changing rooms. Finally, an outdoor seating area equipped for common use was included, consisting of a terrace with a bar.
In addition, the hotel features a strong tourist entertainment component since it offers facilities that suit the leisure concept of the development, such as the inclusion of an outdoor swimming pool (for adults and children) with a size in keeping with the scale of the development, the inclusion of a gym with at least four different items of equipment, and an outdoor activity centre with multiple uses: sightseeing tours on bicycles; sightseeing via interpretive walking tours with a guide; caving, climbing, canyoning, mountaineering or other adventure sports, always accompanied by a guide with training recognised by the competent authority.
Since the development has 37 accommodation units, divided between 32 studios (37 m2 each) and five one-bedroom apartments (52 m2 each), 37 parking spaces were designed at the entrance to the main building for the accommodation units as well as a further five spaces for employees.
We decided to retain, wherever possible, the hand-built dry stone boundary walls, as well as the trees and natural shape of the terrain. The volumes created by the main building and the set of five one-bedroom apartments, located at the top of the slope, incorporate basalt stone, anthracite grey tones and wood, without exceeding three floors.
