The villa is located in the north of the island of São Miguel, built in an “L” shape, and opens out onto sea views, creating an experience directed to the outside, while safeguarding the privacy of the clients. The atmosphere created appears from an elevated platform above the land, where the swimming pool is located. These tectonic bodies were designed with the idea that they were levitating over their location.
We designed the ground floor house in two bodies with different experiences and heights. The body of the social area, with higher ceilings, comprises the hall, guest bathroom, office, living/dining room, kitchen and utility room. The body of the private area, with a lower ceiling height, includes two bedrooms and a suite. What merges these two volumes is an interior/exterior patio, which creates the connecting corridor between the two living areas.
The architectural aesthetics of this object assume our identity of work, both at the spatial level and at the level of materiality, where the horizontal planes are detached from the tectonic bodies and where two types of skin appear – one in polished concrete and the other in wood. The type of experience defined the stereotomy of each body, where the volume of the social spaces used polished concrete. In the intimate spaces a warmer material, wood, was used.
The shape of the building produces an interesting light-shade effect that stimulates the experience of the house and the architecture itself. The materials chosen, the walls with marmorino-type mineral lime coating in beige tones in the larger body, as well as the ipê wood panelling in the smaller body, in our view, create a distinctive effect. We understand that the architectural composition fits well with the surrounding landscape.
