The architectural proposal presented results from an aesthetic and contemporary desire developed with the purpose of creating the necessary conditions for a distinct experience, while meeting the expectations of the plan.
The concept of the restaurant is directly linked to the gastronomy that the space proposes to offer. Thus, the interior architecture seeks to be in symbiosis with the Japanese-inspired menu.
As it is a small space, the intention was to design a stripped-down and sober restaurant, characterised by the American oak wood of the carpentry and the anthracite grey tone of the walls and ceilings. Although they are contractors, they are, however, communicators.
The ceiling of the dining room features a hollow lattice, using an orthogonal reticulated design of American oak wood. Through this, light-shadow effects are produced that animate the restaurant. The lattice rises to the darkness of the ceiling. However, some rectangles are filled with straw — a hollow lattice on a tiny and intimate scale — through which zenith lighting comes out. Also, the use of straw on the ceiling, as well as in the wine cellar and in the display cabinet that precedes the sushi preparation counter, punctuates the space with a touch of liveliness, contrasting with the restrained and discreet design of the interiors.
The intense use of wood in the space takes us back to the forests that have been present in the natural landscape of the Azores since the 19th century. The anthracite ash throws us into the mist and fog that projects itself in the Azorean landscapes.
