Our proposal is a boutique development falling within the category of a Tourist Development in Rural Space – Rural Accommodation.

We understand that the project is directed at leisure tourism, since the development is located in an area with an attractive landscape: the site has unobstructed panoramic view over Mount Pico.

With a prime location in São Roque do Pico, the development will boast eight accommodation units, divided into three types: the main house (which houses three apartments, one of which is for the exclusive use of the owners), one private villa, and four apartments. Despite the project consisting of several buildings, the aim is to harmonise them through the use of material and elements characteristic of the traditional architecture of the island of Pico, while reinterpreting their design and volume and adapting them to the topography of the site.

The main house is given a new spatial organisation on the existing floors and a new floor is added. The basement is transformed into a one-bedroom apartment with a separate entrance. The ground floor, where the reception is located, is home to an apartment with two suites, a living room and a kitchenette. The first floor offers a one-bedroom apartment with more spacious rooms.

The 1+1-bedroom villa reminds us of a typical Pico house, with regional basalt stone cladding and red window frames. This house has direct access to the street and is spread over two floors and a loft.

Situated above the garages are a studio apartment and a one-bedroom apartment.  This building takes us back to the vernacular concept and the marked rurality of the place, and is clad in regional basalt stone with the red wooden frames so characteristic of the island of Pico.

The accommodation units in the studio apartment category are established in a large wooded area in order to naturally dilute their presence on the terrain, which culminates in a panoramic view over Mount Pico. These apartments are clad in regional basalt stone and have a sloping roof, an interior patio at their entrance, and a jacuzzi and a shower on the outdoor patio.

The Tourist Development’s social space will be contained within the Botany Club. It will have a garden planted with native herbaceous plants and grasses, as well as the native trees that dot the land. The garden will include several leisure spaces, such as the Meditation Pavilion, the Gym and Sauna, the Swimming Pool and outdoor fire pit, and the main Club House building, which comprises the kitchen and social area. The kitchen will be prepared for any private events, such as traditional cooking classes. The Club House will also have an indoor living space for reading and relaxation and an outdoor living space consisting of a solarium and a swimming pool.

The Meditation Pavilion will be used for yoga and meditation, and will be accessed via a platform overlooking a reflecting pool, surrounded by lush vegetation and delimited by walls, thus fostering a feeling of isolation and serenity.
