We sought to propose an architectural structure that relates to the surrounding environment in order to take advantage of the natural characteristics of the land, implementing the construction in a “U” shape on the site in order to adapt to the boundaries of the lot and simultaneously create a large protected interior area for private parking and circulation areas.
With regard to the architectural concept, we designed a building for collective housing implanted on a generically rectangular base, according to two axes in the north-south direction on both streets that surround the block, with two floors.
We ensured that the main entrance for the dwellings would always be from the inside of the lot, guaranteeing greater individual privacy for each apartment. The typologies are organised according to a simple and functional scheme, each consisting of a common room, kitchenette, hallway, shared bathroom and double bedroom. There are 10 one-bedroom apartments that face either Porto dos Carneiros and the sea or Pico da Barrosa and the sea, depending on their placement.
On the east and west façades, we propose a simple elevation with a vernacular composition of traditional Azorean construction that is adapted to contemporary times, consisting of doors and windows and a gable roof. The entire materiality of the building is composed of white cement mortar.
